Lake City is an amazing little community that has accomplished much more than you would expect from a population of about 350 people.
We have a beautiful new school that was a monumental struggle to become a reality. It has proven to be well worth the effort as Lake City was recognized as the number one school in the state this year. We have consistently been one of the top schools in the state since our new school was built. We have an incredibly dedicated group of teachers who love living in this supportive community. The number two school in the state this year was Aspen with its almost unlimited tax base. Our school needs a new gym and cafeteria and I am sure that will become a reality when our determined citizens decide to “Make it happen”.
Our new medical center is absolutely beautiful and efficient, so much more than you would expect from a little community like ours. It is a modern wonder with the latest technology in labs facilities, x-ray capabilities and a full time Doctor and Nurse Practioner that are unequaled in their ability. Our Doctor is the classic “Country Doctor”, always there when needed day or night. There seems to be nothing he does not know about medicine. If there is the slightest doubt about a diagnosis he always makes certain you see a specialist. The new center has complete dental facilities with two chairs and a Dentist and Dental Hygienist seeing patients on a regular basis.
Our medical center has two modern fully equipped ambulances and an array of other emergency equipment staffed by a dedicated and extremely well trained group of EMTs who are available 24-7 to handle any and all emergencies.
Our fire station was built in the past few years with the capability of keeping our recently purchased pumper truck and other firefighting equipment completely warm and ready for action on a moments notice. Our pumper truck is more than adequate to handle any situation that might occur in our town. The new station and equipment is operated by a band of well trained firefighters that have reduced our insurance rates to the lowest rate possible for a volunteer department.
Lake City’s new library would be adequate for a town ten times our size. Our Library Board with the help of grants and generous donations purchased a $600,000.00 building that is beautiful and an absolutely perfect fit for a library. It has been completely renovated and is filled with any and all the material and books you would expect to find in any big city library. If what you are looking for is not available our librarian will have it for you in a matter of days.
We have a new theater in our newly refurbished arts center. The theater has new comfortable seating and a sound and lighting system that would be envied by any large city. Our Arts Council brings fabulous entertainment groups to town on a regular basis and our local Theater Group keeps us entertained with surprising talent.
Lake City is also a city of Churches. From its very beginning it was never the wild and wooly mining town that so often evolved from quick wealth. It was always a more sophisticated community where religion and family values came first. The first protestant church on the western slope of Colorado was the Community Presbyterian Church of Lake City. To this day we have more churches than bars. A situation that was very rare in the early days of our state.
We also have the healthiest and most stable deer and elk herds in Colorado. This was accomplished by a dedicated group of citizens who realized that unregulated hunting of our wildlife would soon destroy the gene pool that Colorado is famous for. With the support of the community the Division of Wildlife was persuaded to limit the number of hunters in the units around Lake City. The results have been astounding. The male to female ratio that has been accomplished has far exceeded the wildest dreams of our concerned citizens and the Game Biologist of the Division of Wildlife. Our public land in the most popular hunting area of the nation has produced male to female ratios that equal or exceed the most regulated game ranches anywhere. As proof of the success of this program one of the leaders of the concerned citizens was recently asked by the Division of Wildlife to serve as a Wildlife Commissioner for the state of Colorado.
Lake City while isolated in the least populated and most beautiful county in the nation with 96% public land has produced an incredible place to live and raise a family. With the limited tax base all the wonderful improvements could not have been accomplished without the love and support of our part time residents. While the 350 or so of us that live here work hard to improve our community without the financial support of our part time citizens these fantastic improvements would not have been possible.
Lake City is a special, wonderful and beautiful place. We would love to have you come for a visit. You may decide to stay a little longer.
