Many people who fall in love with the beauty of the Colorado Rockies have the dream of a log home sitting on a pine covered mountain side.
Today’s log home has little resemblance to the old log homes of yesteryear. The modern log home built in recent times has all the comfort and convenience of any home you would find in the largest cities. The main difference is you have the look, feel and beauty of a true mountain dwelling.
The ultimate log home is the Swedish Cope where each log is fitted to match perfectly to the adjoining log. This type construction is incredibly beautiful but it is labor intensive requiring skilled craftsman. The Swedish Cope is most often done on site using heavy equipment to place and hold the logs in position while being fitted into place. There is no more beautiful and efficient type construction.
The more popular log construction is logs fitted together in a factory type location and then taken to the home site and reassembled. These logs are usually milled to have a flat surface and are much more quickly fitted and assembled. The chinking between the logs is beautifully done and gives the appearance of the Swedish Cope but is much less labor intensive. The end product is a beautiful and efficient log structure that will last many life times.
Another type log building is the three sided log or sometimes called the “D” log. This offers the exterior appearance of a log home with the convenience of an interior flat surface. The flat surface on the interior makes cabinet installation much easier and gives more options for interior decorating. This type construction is normally much more economical due to the fact it can be done on site and normally cuts construction time dramatically. The flat interior wall is the finished product and ready to be decorated.
The least popular but my favorite is the two sided log that give the appearance of an early American log home on the exterior as well as the interior but offers the economy of quick construction like the “D” log. This type construction usually requires heavy equipment due to the weight of the heavier log. It does give the interior feel much like the old fashion pioneer home. In my opinion it is the best of all worlds and was my choice to build before my wife found a beautiful old Victorian home built in 1881 that she had to have. That is another story soon to follow.
Whichever type log home you might choose, today’s log home will give you the feel of the early pioneer with the beauty, convenience, and comfort of modern construction.
