Colorado Highway 149 is a little obscure two lane road just outside of Gunnison that leads to some of the most breath taking beautiful country that you can possibly imagine. It also leads to a life style that many people dream of but few accomplish. It is just about as far away from the glitz and glamour of today’s modern world as you can get.
The people that turn down Highway 149 are very often some of the most accomplished people of our society but they have no desire to make you aware of their accomplishments. When they head down 149 they leave all that behind and just wish to enjoy the quiet life that awaits them down that special road.
You first pass thru Powderhorn, a little ranching community where until recently was all cattle ranches but now along with the ranches you find a few get-a-way retreats and work from home abodes for a few lucky people. Next is Lake City, in our opinion, the shining star of Highway 149. Traveling on over Slumgullion Pass, one of Colorado’s most spectacular drives, you come to Creede. Creede was once one of Colorado’s most rowdy mining towns where the gambling houses never closed. Today it is a quaint mountain community full of shops, restaurants and its famous theatre. Next is the little cross road community of South Fork that has endless recreational opportunities. At South Fork the incredible little Highway 149 ends and meets Highway 160 where you quickly return to the fast pace life of today’s world.
Back to Lake City in our opinion the shining star of Highway 149. Living on Highway 149 and especially Lake City is very much like we have heard our grandparents talk of how “it use to be”. We have no traffic problems [except for the mother deer with their fawns or the magnificent bucks crossing the streets], little or no crime, doors unlocked, windows open [in the summer], only hi-rises are the beautiful mountains that surround us, an incredible school, unequaled medical facility, city of churches, community spirit, neighbors helping neighbors and all this encompassed in a quaint little mountain village sitting isolated in a beautiful mountain valley.
You have a lifestyle like living in yesteryear with all the modern necessities of today’s world. We have high speed internet enabling many professional people to live and work here. We have satellite TV, cell phone service [in most areas], land line phone service, modern day fire protection, and highways cleared before breakfast.
This lifestyle is certainly not for everyone but there are many people out there in our modern fast paced world who are searching and dreaming of a quieter slower life where life can be lived as it should be. In today’s “keeping up with the Joneses” world these places are very much like hen’s teeth, very rare.
Highway 149 is a marvelous place where a few of these utopia places with a life style many dream of can be found. Powderhorn, Lake City, Creede, and South fork are all located on the small little two lane road and if you are looking for a wonderful lifestyle take the drive.
