Over the years we have had some very exciting experiences with our close neighbors, the Black Bear. Some of these experiences have been funny and some not so funny.
When our grand daughter was a baby my son called me on our radios at the Lodge and said, “Dad get over here quick with a gun. I’m standing here on the stairs holding the baby looking a big black bear face to face.” The bear had pulled off a screen and opened a partially opened window and come into a bedroom. I had no gun but I ran to the house as quickly as possible but the bear had departed thru a window that had not been open. Kyleen is nine years old now and still experiencing bears in the house.
Employees in our restaurant one afternoon were sacking ice in the kitchen and they heard some noise in the dining area that they assumed was another employee getting ready for the evening meal. The noise continued and as they sat sacking and talking the two way door from the dining room came swinging open and a huge black bear came flying by and out the back door. If you ever go by the restaurant at the INN AT THE LAKE the blinds are still bent and warped where he had tried to get out. He had come in the back door when no one was there.
One year at the Lake there were numerous sighting of a little yearling bear with very distinctive markings on his front legs. He was seen at Wupperman campground a half-mile from the lodge and at almost the exact time he was seen entering a cabin at the lodge. This went on for several days where people would see this bear one place and at almost the same time he would be spotted somewhere else. The mystery was finally solved when the twins were both spotted together at the lodge and the DOW personnel were present and they shot the little fellows with rubber bullets and they decided being around people wasn’t a good idea. They were never seen again.
Our daughter who lived at the Lake came home one day and found her house a mess. She had cats and had fabricated a cat door in a bedroom window. The bear had simply reached into the cat opening and removed the wooden cat door and climbed in the window. He went thru the pantry picked out his favorite items and spent quiet some time enjoying them from the looks of things.
My wife was relaxing in our hot tub one evening by herself. She had her eyes closed enjoying the warm water but had a “feeling” come over her. She opened her eyes and looked up and a big bear was just three feet away looking right into her face. She did not panic and began thinking of all she had heard about a situation like this. Look big came to mind, she is five foot two inches, maybe. She grabbed her towel and stood up looking real big. The bear ran off and she came running in the house where I was asleep with my earphones on. He could have eaten her and I would never have known.
This year has been especially bad for the bears. The snow was late melting and their normal food supply has been affected. Both my sons have had bears in their houses and have been very fortunate not to have sustained more damage or injury than they have. The bears have been very careful to open the freezer and refrigerator doors instead of tearing them off which is the normal routine. The DOW officer and the Sheriff caught a bear in my son’s house yesterday and ran him out and shot him with birdshot. Maybe he will decide that town is not a good place to be.
Its just part of living this close to nature. We try to be careful and not have food stuff around especially in the spring and fall when nature’s food supply sometimes falls short.
